Bougainvillas In Spring

Bouganvillas In Spring

"Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's Party !" "

Here is a pic of my magenta Bougainvilla plant in full bloom.

bougainvilla bougainvillas bouganvilla india flowers
Bougainvilla is a tropical plant that grows all year around in regions with hot weather. In Delhi, this plant loses all its leaves in the cold winters and starts booming only in mid - March. It requires very little water and lots of sunlight. The best way to get lots of Bougainvilla flowers on your plant is to trim the ends of the stems regularly.

Eklavya The Royal Guard - Movie Review

Movie Review of Eklavya - The Royal Guard.

This weekend I saw the movie Eklavya -The Royal Guard. A tragic film, it ended the week of gloom which began with the murder of Bob Woolmer (RIP) and India's depressing loss against Sri Lanka.

eklavya royal guard movie review film reviewsEklavya - The Royal Guard - 3/10 - This movie starts off with a Rajasthani King (Boman Irani) murdering his sick queen (Sharmila Tagore) because she calls out the name of her lover Eklavya (Amitabh Bachchan) while he is reciting a poem from Shakespeare. Saif Ali Khan is the crown prince who returns from abroad for his mothers funeral. Eklavya is the royal guard who has sworn to protect the family. He is also the father of the crown prince.

Meanwhile, the King's brother and nephew are planning to ursurp the palace and fort. Lots of treachery and killings follow. In the end, Saif Ali Khan tries to commit suicide by pointing a gun at his head. Eklavya, almost blind now, throws a knife at his hand and stops him. The movie ends with Saif returning seized property back to the villagers and accepting Eklavya as his father. Sunjay Dutt who plays a nosy cop refuses to arrest Eklavya for his crimes.

Amitabh Bachchan is a good actor, but I'm real tired of seeing him in every other film. It takes away the essence of a story when you see the same face playing every second role. Saif Ali Khan is his expressionlesss self and so is Jackie Shroff. Jimmy Shergill, Vidya Balan and Boman Irani are ok. The cinematography is awesome - Rajasthan locales always look great on film. Music and songs were nothing great while dialogues are too preachy ! The movie suffers from a lot of factual errors and things that don't add up like Eklavya's biased blindness and the period the film is based in.

Did you watch Eklavya - The Royal Guard ? Are you planning too ??

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week 2007

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week 2007 -WLIFW

The 2007 Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week or WLIFW is currently being held at the Ashok Hotel in Delhi this week. Every year it is the same story - models walk on the catwalk in either illfitting, badly cut western clothes or wear some boring 'ethnic outfits'.

A few years ago, a former beauty contest winner and model had told me, "These designers are big hoaxes. They just pick up stuff from the flea markets of Thailand or other places and add a bit of sequins, trim and zari work....then they pay us to wear them. There is absolutely no creativity." I was shocked at what my colleague had said coz at that time I was not aware how fashion designers use the media to promote their useless 'creations.'

2007 wills lifestyle india fashion week wlifw lakme indian designers jj vallaya ritu kumarLater on, I was sent on a shoot where 'top designers' like JJ Vallaya and Ritu Kumar were displaying their collection of Lehenga cholis and Saris. Ritu Kumar was a woman who was well practised in giving sound bites, JJ Vallaya, however, was quite a different story. This fat sardar, oh boy, he is a huge 1 metre in diameter - was hoity toity at its worst! Being a Punjabi and Indian, he started of by saying, "Don't ask me any questions in Hindi, its so uh..ah........(dismissive wave of hand). When I asked him on camera about expected revenues and plans for future growth, he started blabbing that, "everything is not about the money".........yeah right !

2007 wills lifestyle india fashion week wlifw lakme indian designers jj vallaya ritu kumarMost Indian designers just like other Indians in businesses like films, music or media lack originality when it comes to their creations. It is easier to copy outfits from fashion shows in non English speaking countries like Thailand, Brazil and Japan, add a few embellishments and pass them off as your own instead of creating them from scratch. Getting designs from student and upcoming designers is also another way to get outfits on the catwalk. However, the biggest mistake made by designers is using common fabrics and local tailors. Haphazard management of fashion events is another faux pas.

2007 wills lifestyle india fashion week wlifw lakme indian designers jj vallaya ritu kumarThe media after being treated to a five star lunch and complimentary gifts may write stuff about 'foreign buyers' visiting and India being the newest fashion destination. These are just words and I've done it too ! Any juvenile can see that the clothes are just decorated 'potato sacks' - they are not measured, pinned and cut like those at top European fashion houses. Also, the fabric is not something new and different. The only foreign markets Indian designers can possibly cater too are the gullible socialites and NRI market. After all, non resident Indians and Pakistanis do need traditional outfits for weddings and other social occassions.

And please, getting the wives of ambassadors and other foreign friends to sit in the front row does not mean you have foreign buyers ! Click her to see what foreign fashion journalists covering the 2007 Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week are upto !

So, what do you think about the Indian Fashion scenario and the 2007 Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week ?

Guru and Black Friday - Movie Reviews

Movie Reviews of Guru and Black Friday

This weekend I managed to catch 'Guru' by Mani Ratnam and 'Black Friday'. This is how I rated them -

guru movie reviews black friday review abhishek bachchan aish mani ratnam sucked awfulGuru - 4/10 - starring Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Madhavan, Aish and Abhishek. Guru is based on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani - an unscrupulous industrialist. The movie is set in the 1960's and the characters age through the movie. The script is average. As for acting - Abhishek 'loser' Bachchan overeacts, Aishwarya Rai is her wide eyed self, Madhavan is average, Vidya Balan passes in her small role while Mithun Chakravorty is excellent as the publisher of a newspaper.

The music of guru was awful - songs were totally unmemorable and lyrics were meaningless.
Most Idiotic Scene - Abhishek Bachachan shows his bulging, paunchy stomach to Aishwarya. She puts her head to the flab and says, "There are 25,000 people living inside".... No wonder Abhishek did not take off his shirt in Dhoom 2 or any of his other movies....hilarious

Vidya Balan - Madhavan Kiss - It was good but not better than Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom. Vidya was better than Aishwarya.

Guru tries to prove that the ends justifies the means, and doing anything is right if you can earn a few bucks through it....this is the another reason why I though it sucked. It seemed like propaganda for Reliance and Ambanis created by their close friends - the Bachchans. The part about Aishwarya having twin girls instead of two sons like Dhirubhai seems to be inspired by the story of UP Politician Amar Singh (another close pal of the Bachchans) who has twin daughters.

guru movie reviews black friday review abhishek bachchan aish mani ratnam sucked awfulBlack Friday - 2/10 - Is a confusing movie about the 1993 Bombay Blasts and Hindu Muslim riots. I couldn't figure out who the characters were supposed to be. Packed with blood, gore and scary scenes, I quickly flipped channels.

Did you watch Guru or Black Friday ?

I like Alix Beaujour's paintings because of the bright colours and the expression in the face of the people he has painted. Here is a nice picture of negro girls picking cotton in the fields. Reminds me of that book I'd written about earlier - 'A Painted House' by John Grisham.

I like the blues and reds in this painting called 'Dancers'. The geometrical designs in the background are very attractive. I've never seen any black people doing ballet though....even on television!

Reliance Fresh & Subhiksha - Supermarkets in India

Reliance Fresh and Subhiksha - Retail Stores or Supermarkets in India -A Review

Reliance Fresh and Subhiksha have opened up retail supermarkets selling fruits and vegetables in major cities of India. Recently, Bharti has tied up with Wallmart to open up supermarkets in India. This post is about supermarkets in India and their long term effects.

reliance fresh retail store supermarket supermarkets product review subhiksha delhi india vegetable sellers
A few days ago, I visited the local Reliance Fresh supermarket that had just opened in my Delhi neighbourhood and this is what I observed -

1. Range of Products - Regular vegetables, fruits, Reliances' own brands of packed pulses, Maggi products and Pepsi.

2. Prices - The price was marked in paisas just like at American stores. For example - Potatoes were priced at 5.90 per kg while onions were 15.90 per kg. Yeah right, what difference does 10p make?

3. Comparable Cost - The rate of vegetables like onions and potatoes were 10p less than that of local vegetable sellers. The rate of other products were however much higher than they should have been. Seems like Reliance Fresh applied the same strategy that McDonalds uses to attract customers - ice cream for Rs. 7 and Cola for Rs. 20.

4. Customer Service - The staff in red shirts were mainly checking to see if people were shoplifting and did'nt seem to know much about the products or company. The guards kept yelling at everyone to have their bags checked before leaving.

5. Checking Out - There was a long queue that moved very slowly. VAT or value added tax was added to the bill which increased the cost of the vegetables just bought.

6. Parking - Absolutely zero parking. The guard was yelling at local rickshaw pullers to move away from the entrance.

7. Customers - were middle class folk from my apartment block. They kept touching and turning around each vegetable before selecting them just like they do at the regular vegetable sellers. This looked really out of place and added to a huge crowd.

What is the future for retail supermarkets in India ?

Well, Superbazaar was a government supermarket in the 1980's that closed down because of financial irregularities by employees and a lack of customers. Here's why I think Reliance Fresh and Subhiksha will go the same way -

1. Operating costs are too high - Rent for shops at prime areas, salaries of atleast 15 people at each store, refrigeration, transport, electricity, advertising and losses through shoplifting have to be accounted for. The profits earned through sales will be barely enough to recover costs.

2. Indians are too cheap and thrifty - Most customers won't take the bait of cheap potatoes. They would rather buy one kg of potatoes from Reliance and other products from whichever vegetable seller or retail store is cheaper.

3. Indians like to bargain and bully - Bargaining and getting freebies like chilli or coriander is not allowed at supermarkets like Reliance Fresh or Subhiksha.

4. Type of Products - The potatoes and onions on sale were of a small size. Some vegetables looked like they had been sprayed with something to make them shiny and attractive. People usually don't buy processed foods like jam, sauces, cheese, noodles etc. because ' yeh cheez pet main jum jaata hain'. (harmful as it is not easily digestible)

5. Vegetables are not changed everday and are refrigerated at night. People are aware that the food is not as 'fresh' as that of the local vegetable seller.

6. Most Indians like to shop in privacy, so that 'nazar' or evil eye does not fall on the goods they buy. This, I think is the main reason why a majority of the crowd at Reliance Fresh is just looking around and not buying much. (like me)

reliance fresh retail store supermarket supermarkets product review subhiksha delhi india vegetable sellers
Effects of Retail Supermarkets Like Reliance Fresh

- It may put small vegetable sellers and retail stores out of business. I bet even Reliance does not want this because sales of more costly Reliance products like cellphones, Vimal clothes etc. will suffer.

- Farmers are supposed to earn more as Reliance will buy directly from them instead of the mandi or wholesaler. Knowing the kind of cheats the Ambanis and Reliance are, I seriously doubt they will give the farmer a good price for their produce. Probably, just a rupee or so more so that the wholesalers lose the good vegetables.

- The government will benefit because vegetables will now be taxed.

The initial days saw a huge rush as people came to see what Reliance Fresh was all about after recieving pretty invitations and shopping card offers from the company. A few weeks later the crowd has thinned out. The companies are declaring 'huge profits' but I doubt if they can maintain the momentum in the long run.

Have you shopped at Reliance Fresh or Subhiksha ? Do you prefer the local vegetable seller ?

Here is a pic of Shah Rukh Khan with gulal all over his face.

2007 Indian Budget - Pet Friendly

Pet Friendly 2007 Indian Budget

In the annual 2007 budget the govenment announced that the cost of petfood like cat food and dog food will be cheaper as the duties will be cut by 10 percent. Kudos to the govenment. Here are the facts -

Finance Minister - P Chidambaram : "I have good news for cat and dog lovers, I propose to reduce the duty on pet foods from 30 per cent to 20 per cent."

Opposition Party creates a commotion.

Speaker - Somnath Chatterjee: "don't you like dogs".

Leader of Opposition- L K Advani - "At a time today when aam admi (ordinary man) finds dal (lentils) costly, the Finance Minister exults over the fact that he is reducing prices of food for pets like dogs and cats"

Railway Minister - Laloo Prasad Yadav, "Pet food price cut benefits BJP leaders, these self-same leaders keep high pedigree dogs, whereas village simpletons like us only keep mongrels poor things. They're always running from pillar to post begging for food."
( I suppose he was referring to Maneka Gandhi and pals who roam about Lodhi Gardens with expensive foreign breeds as showpieces)

indian budget 2007 cost price dry wet petfood cat food dog whiskas brit sportmix pedigree
I think it is a good idea of the govenment to reduce the price of petfood. If the government is giving sops to every section of society - poor, women, wildlife, businesses etc. Then why not pets too ? It is not just the rich but even poor people in slums who have pets cats, dogs or birds. These pets may not be expensive foreign pedigreed animals but they are quite cute and well loved by their family.

The only reason why its usually the rich who feed their pets dogfood or catfood is because these items are very costly in India. Reducing the prices of petfood will lead to pets from not so rich families also getting a taste of petfood.

I don't know much about Pedigree dogfood but a pack of catfood usually costs -

indian budget 2007 cost price rate dry wet petfood cat food dog whiskas brit sportmix pedigreeDry Whiskas - Rs.80 for 200 gms
Dry Brit or Sportmix - Rs.100 for 300 gms.
Wet Whiskas - Rs.25 for a pouch of Tuna or Salmon in jelly.

My cat loves catfood but like Laloo Prasad Yadav I usually feed him only kitchen scraps. I give him catfood only as a treat and try to make a single pack last a month because of the high cost. As the prices of petfood reduce more people will be able to feed their pets which will result in healthy and happy pets in India.

Pets may not be voters or have a voice but its good to see that the govenment is keeping them in mind when it comes to making proposals. As for the BJP, they always protest against any measure that does'nt benefit themselves.

I hope the petfood sellers pass on this benefit to the customers and don't keep the profits to themselves. And Mr. Laloo, next year, please announce special compartments in railway trains for pets and their owners as we don't like leaving them behind when we go on vacation....... pleeeease. (You'll get my vote)
