India vs England in Delhi - Stuff you won't hear in the News !!

India vs England Cricket Match at New Delhi

I went for the first one dayer of India vs England at the Ferozshah Kotla yesterday. I did'nt feel like doing weird favours for a pass so I bought a Rs.1000 Ticket. Here are some things that should be kept in mind to watch a match in Delhi.

1. Arrive at the stadium more than an hour and a half before the match to capture the best seats. The view of most of the seats are blocked by giant pillars, camera stands, fences etc. Also, later on there is a long queue to get in which people keep jumping. There was this Englishman who kept yelling like crazy to the cops to stop the q jumpers but was ignored by both who were pretending they did not know english. However, if u are a little late it is better to jump the queue. More passes and tickets are printed and distributed than there are seats and even valid ticket holders are not allowed in after the stadium gets full.

2. Don't carry any of the stuff that is not allowed to be taken in like cellphones, cameras etc. as it is confiscated at the gate unless you have very high jack, ability to lie convincingly or can think up ingenious places to hide stuff in. It always helps to bring a lady along as she can hide stuff in her handbag, socks etc, checking is not that strict and we can get away with most. However, I did'nt risk taking my mobile but there was this girl who convinced the cops she had just come back from hospital and was not aware about the rule.

3. What you can see - tiny players in team colours walking out - the numbers on thier jersey is distorted because of thier fast movements. The scoreboard and big screen was placed too high and in the wrong area where the score could not be viewed by all. Most were clueless about who was batting, the score, overs bowled etc except those who managed to sneak in thier mobile phones. We could guess a player was out when the team formed a huddle and a figure walked back to the pavilion. Parts of the field are blind spots hidden by pillars and the action can be judged only by the roar of the crowd or the silence punctuated by abuses.

4. What I clearly saw - Irfan Pathan jumping 1.5 metres off the ground after taking a wicket, Dhoni's orange gloves, Kaif catching Collingwood, a six down the wicket that hit a level 2 stand, Dravid fielding in the slips by his stooped style of walking, Sreesanth by his long run up and Harbhajan by his patka. English players all looked the same from far.

5. What you don't see on TV - the indian players warming up - practising difficult catches before taking the filed. The groundsmen running in drink breaks with a long ruler and bucket to touch up the pitch. Plastic bags and four signs being picked up from the field by ball boys between overs. Fielders signing autographs on the boundary just as the ball is being bowled with the crowd yelling at him to pay attention.

6. The atmosphere in the stands is fantastic with chants of we want Dhoni, bhajji bhajji, india jeetega, whistling, truck horns blaring, plastic chairs being thumped and continous clapping. This fat kid in a red shirt was copied by others when he loudly made sounds of a donkey, cow, dogs to hoots and laughs from the crowd. There were harly any faces not painted in the tricolor as there were folks roaming about doing the job for Rs. 20 yelling 'fazpant fazpant'. All around posters were being coloured by fans and giant flags were carried around the stand. The Police made people sitting in the aisles get up only to see them coming back a little later. The empty seats behind the pillars were either being used as makeshift beds for a quick nap or as stairs. The food was awful but really costly - 2 samosas for Rs.20, pack of chips for Rs. 20, glass of water - Rs. 20, ice cream - Rs. 30. Things were being sold for more than twice thier MRP and most preferred to starve after asking the price and saying Baap re Baap !! I bought a biryani for 50 bucks and to my dismay saw that the packet had more cauliflower in it than rice - forced it down my throat in the break between innings as Kajra Re and Ashiq Banaya Apne played on the muffled sound system.

India won the match by 39 runs but I felt I had my money's worth only when Dhoni drove the red TVS Man of the Match bike that Harbhajan Singh won. Bhajji rode pillion around the stadium, waving to the crowd. The crowd ran towards the bike almost as if they wished to be his red carpet. Dhoni showed great driving skills by dodging them cleverly. The media walas and the cops chased the bike too till Dhoni returned to the presentation area. Dhoni seems to me to be a very nice and genuine person - and handsome too !!

Michael Schumacher at the 2006 Formula One Season

The last season proved that luck was the only thing that Michael Schumacher had little off. The 'n' times the car failed to work properly and the crashes with other drivers either stole many hard worked for points or resulted in a non finish.

This season has a new knock out qualifying format and brings back tyre changes which should see teams playing different strategies. Hopefully, we won't see just one unknown driver leading from start to finish for a large majority of the races. However, if Schumi were to win all the races, then I certainly won't complain !! ( Touch wood )

Schumee, you are without doubt the best driver on the track - The Ferrari team works very hard and is made for challenges - so let's go beat the Shit out of those amateurs in helmets !!!

First Race of 2006 this Sunday in Bahrain. All the best Schumi !! (Please don't break a leg )

Movies I saw on the Weekend - Rang de Basanti, Chingaari

A look at 2 movies I saw - Rang De Basanti and Chingaari

1. Rang De Basanti - 1/10 - "Bacche gorey honge ya kaale" - this idiot movie can be summarised by this idiot quote of Aamir's who looks like a 55 year old with a false hairpiece. This movie on male bonding and teen angst 'badhkahs' the youth towards taking up terrorism. Yeah many sayRang De Basanti tries to relive the heroics of Bhagat Singh and co in the freedom stuggle and the fact that youth should get motivated to change society, but no one should forget that Bhagat Singh was still a terrorist and was hanged for his crimes. Ya, I know guys do insane things under peer pressure, but no one can be as crazy as Aamir, firang, Saif in drag, southie and gang. They seem to have forgotten that it was Mahatma Gandhi with his letters and peaceful protests that ensured freedom for India.....All I got from this Rang De Basanti was Aamir's fetish for moustaches, attempts to win an Oscar( as if), ridiculous dancing, boring songs, bad dialogue and extensive publicity for NDTV news channel. If u want to watch a good movie on a social issue , go watch 'Fitna' !!

2. Chingaari - 4/10 - on oppression of women. Ila Arun is good. Sushmita Sen tries hard, but cannot pick up that accent and does not suit the role. The new guy as the postman is cute. I missed the end because of a power cut, so what else can I say ?

Manmohan(sonia), Bush or Musharraf - Asli Bluffmaster Kaun ?

All are hiding the truth (lying) to some degree for some specific gains or the other. Musharraf's 'choona' is easy to spot as nobody can be fooled a 100 times. Its obvious there will never be any election in Pakistan as long as he wants to be Dictator(forever and a day), and so he won't recieve many 'gifts' from Uncle Sam. The Asli Bluffmaster will be found out in a year when economic growth rate and election results are compared - I have no doubt that that would be Sonia(Manmohan)!!

Manmohan Singh welcomed George W Bush & company at the airport with a bouquet of yellow roses ( not phool mala )- Chamchagiri can often be mistaken for practising the National Tourism Mantra 'Athiti Devo Bhavah'.

In the past weeks the govenment has worked hard to show that India is on America's side, mainly by pretending it believes some of the hoaxes perpetuated by the US administration. 1. Control of the so called Bird Flu 'pandemic' that diverted attention from the cartoon row. 2. Announcements in the budget for money to fund 'India's Mission to the Moon' - if India ever suceeds, we will be the first to walk on the moon ( Apollo Hoax). 3. Reduction of Import Duty on HIV Drugs - for a disease that exists only because of the propaganda surrounding it - the drugs being toxic and the real cause of HIV Deaths etc etc.

Through the years, America only deals with those that earn them more money. India's economy is growing steadily - it can grow still more rapidly, but for that we need certain hi tech technology, at a low cost from America. We also need a market to sell our cheap goods - the more money India makes the more facilities we hopefully will be able to provide to our poor. America is looking for cheap manpower, free trade for thier businesses in Indian markets etc. India should try to wrangle a deal where in the end India will make more profits, and grow faster economically than USA. Some US businesses can be allowed in - where India won't be really losing anything, eg. Entry of Companies selling Ice Skates and Skies - not many in India would need to buy that !!

India is a free democratic country. Everyone has the right to protest against anything or anyone. Saddam may have tortured and killed lots of people, but through history successive American Governments have killed millions of people in various countries they branded as unacceptable. All politicians give orders to kill to gain vital economic resources - it's just that America's gets more publicity. It is better that some people are speaking out(burning effgies etc) rather than the Entire Nation silence its conscience, just to earn a 'Couple of Extra Bucks'.
