Bruce Willis Jaw - Medical Tourism in india

Bruce Willis plastic surgery in New Delhi, India - Popularity Of Medical Tourism

I have always heard of foreigners coming to India for cheap medical procedures like heart surgery, knee transplants, cosmetic and dental surgery, but this one is just too funny -

John Joseph Conway a 43 year old firefighter from America visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi with a photo of Bruce Willis. He said he wanted to look the part of a firefighter and wished for a nice strong jaw line like Bruce Willis. This, he said would fit his macho image of a fire fighter. Dr Vivek Kumar was on the team of doctors who operated on John Joseph Conway after studying his face for three days.

The surgery was conducted at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and lasted three hours. It costed 1,600 American dollars which was one tenth of the cost charged for the same surgical procedure in the United States of America.

Every years thousands of foreign nationals come to India for medical tourism. This medical tourism package involves a holiday package to tourist places and the cost of the medical procedure. Medical tourism holiday destinations include trips to places like Rajasthan, Kerala, Taj Mahal in Agra, beach resorts of Goa and Karnataka and wildlife adventures.

A few hospitals in India with well trained staff and world class facilities offer medical tourism packages. These are the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences - AIIMS, Apollo Hospital and Escorts Heart Institute and Research Center in Delhi, B M Birla Heart Research Center, Christian Medical College in Vellore, Tata Memorial Hospital, PD Hinduja National Hospital in Mumbai, Apollo Cancer Hospital in Chennai, Indraprastha Medical Corporation and Institute Of Cardiovascular Diseases.

Most of the doctors in these hospitals have done part of their education or training in foreign countries. As these hospitals are operated by private companies, the medical facilites are extremely exorbitant and unaffordable for a majority of Indians. However, foreign tourists from countries like USA, Britain and United Arab Emirates would find medical tourism in India quite cheap because of the high value of their currency.

Dental Plans include Smile designing, Metal Free Bridge, Dental Implants, Porcelain Metal Crown, Root canals, Tooth whitening and Tooth cleaning. Costs are approximately half of what they cost in the United States. Eye Treatments like laser eye surgery, Lasik Refractive Packages and Lasik Eye Surgery in India costs as much as 8 to 10 percent less than they do in the USA or UK.

Heart Care programs include treatment of problems like Valvular diseases, Arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, Hypercholesterolemia, Family history of coronary disease, Hypercholesterolemia and Heart disease symptoms. Some procedures that are available at the above mentioned medical tourism centers are directional coronary atherectomy, rotablation, coronary artery stenting, intravascular ultrasound, balloon valvuloplasty and non-surgical closure of holes in the heart. They usually cost 50 percent less in India.

medical tourism cheap plastic surgery heart dental lasik laser eye cosmetic orthopedic treatment india delhi firefighter bruce willis jaw john conwayA heart care surgery which costs something around $30,000 in USA can cost only about $8,000 in India. A few Surgical treatment holiday packages offered include Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Open Heart Surgery, Angiographies, Angioplasties, Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, Paediatric Intervention nnd Cardiology Robotic Surgery. Some popular heart tourism hospitals are The Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology in Bangalore, the Cardiology Hospital in Kanpur, the Heart Hospital in Calicut and the Sree Sudihindra Medical Mission Hospital in Cochin.

Cosmetic surgery is what most international medical tourists come to India for. Cosmetic surgery includes hair restoration and implants, rhinoplasties or nose jobs, face lifts, demabrasions, chin and cheek enlargement, breast surgery and reconstruction and liposuction. This is all available at a fraction of the cost in America or UK at the best of facilites.

Orthopaedic surgery like hip and knee replacement, the Illizarov technique, limb lengthening, Birmingham Hip resurfacing technique, minimal invasive surgery, cartilage and bone transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, spine surgery like fixation, stabilization and fusion are regularly treated. Other medical problems like Arthiritis, sports injuries, complex broken bones, bone tumors and scoliosis are also cured.

Other than this a wide variety of medical tests can be done at cheap rates in India. Some unscrupulous private hospitals also arrange for illegal transplants like kidney and liver. Though this is not legitimate no one gets caught cause everyone pays a bribe. This is quite sad as many poor people are forced to sell their organs or are kidnapped and murdered for their organs so that rich foreigners can benefit.

These medical treatments usually have a waiting period of around nine to twelve months in America, Britain or Europe whereas in India there is no waiting period. Just arrive any day and have the job of your choice done.

One thing I want to mention, is that medicine has become a big business. Many doctors say that you are sick and need big operations just to make big bucks on the operation. Always take a second or third opinion and try traditional medicine first before deciding to go for any surgery. The damage caused by surgery is irreversible and can lead to complications later in life. Don't let a single doctor convince you that you are sick and need expensive treatments, unless there is concrete proof from different sources.

What do you think of medical tourism in India ?

Tim Ashkar - African American Art Paintings

Tim Ashkar - African American Art Paintings

Thought I'd write a bit about Tim Ashkar, an artist whose paintings I like. He is not very old or dead like the other artists I write about. Tim Ashkar was born in 1956 and must be around 51 years old. He usually draws paintings of women especially african women, christian religious themes and gardens.

As a child Tim Ashkar always loved art and decided to pursue art as a career at the age of 18. He studied oil painting and drawing for five years under Judith Serbaroli, the daughter of a famous Italian artist. Ashkar's work is strongly influenced by religion and mythology.

Tim Ashkar has also created scenery for tv shows and films. Some of his paintings can be viewed in Washington DC and the Pickfair Mansion. I hope that one day I can afford to actually go to foreign museums and see them for real.

Shahrukh Khan on Kaun Banega Crorepati KBC

Shah Rukh Khan as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati Show ( KBC)

Last evening, I caught the first episode of KBC or Kaun Banega Crorepati hosted by Shahrukh Khan to see what was different. Kaun Banega Crorepati is India's version of the popular 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Show' and has a prize money of 2,00,00,000 Rupees, 15 questions and four lifelines -phone a friend, audience poll, 50-50 and flip. Originally hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, it is now hosted by Shahrukh Khan. Here are some points which I thought I'd mention -

Shah rukh khan shahrukh amitabh bachchan kbc kaun banega crorepati prasenjit sarkar romesh gugilla
1. Shahrukh Khan started off KBC by saying he would not use 'shudh' or pure Hindi but the language of the people which is a mix of Hindi, English and Urdu. 'Lock kiya jaaye' became 'freeze kiya jaaye' and 'I want to quit' became 'Mein gale milna chahta hoon'. ( Lets' freeze the answer and Give me a hug). Shahrukh also used phrases like 'Inshallah' which added a totally new flavor to the show.

2. He wasn't stammering as usual - must have done the take a couple of times. He was nervous in the beginning but so was Amitabh Bachchan when he first started doing KBC. Amitabh got better but Shahrukh may do better than him coz he connects with a larger audience.

3. Shahrukh Khan was not looking good. The lights and makeup played havoc with his already ordinary looking features. Nose looked far too large and teeth were crooked. His smile does not touch his eyes and looks fake, so he should avoid it if he does't really feel like smiling. Most of his jokes on KBC fell flat.

4. Like a typical Delhi-ite Shahrukh Khan made himself the 'King' of his jungle - the KBC studio and decided to do and say whatever he wished. Poking fun at the contestants and laughing like a maniac at his own jokes. He renamed the computer from 'ComputerJi' to 'Compaq Da' and 'Compaq guru' with reference to the brand name and the region the contestants came from - Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. Shah Rukh spoke some rehearsed Bengali and Telugu which I could not understand and he did'nt bother to explain either.

5. Contestant One - Prasenjit Sarkar -This bengali dude is the rollover KBC contestant from the nine month old unfinished show hosted by Amitabh Bachchan which stopped due to his health problem. He is the only contestant to face both hosts and he seemed to make Shahrukh Khan pretty uncomfortable.

6. Contestant Two - Romesh Gugilla - After saying that Romesh and his family members names were difficult to pronouce, Shahrukh Khan decided to call Ramesh funny uncool names like Googy and Gooey !! This was even after Romesh said he wanted to be called Rom. Come on Shahrukh, you are not a firang !

7. Lastly the end - Shahrukh Khan hugs guests too tightly, massages them and blows wet kisses to 'boys' and girls back home. Yeah, Shahrukh we know you are bisexual but no need to make it so obvious. (Once when ShahRukh Khan was in Delhi shooting for a film, I actually saw him feeling up the lafangas or vagabounds who had gathered to watch the shooting!)

Why did Amitabh Bachchan quit KBC when he was getting great money for it ?
I'd say this was because of a real weird contestant who came on the show. He had spooky tantric eyes and kept touching Amitabh Bachchan's ring after each question. Though this guy did'nt win a dime, Amitabh Bachchan fell seriously ill a few episodes later. Knowing the superstitious person Mr.Bachchan and his family is I bet he quit cause he did'nt want to face this sort of situation again.

Lastly, who was better in KBC, Shah Rukh Khan or Amitabh Bachchan -
I'd say Shah Rukh Khan. Amitabh was quite monotonous and a bit boring.

Did you watch Shahrukh Khan in KBC - Kaun Banega Crorepati ?

Shilpa Shetty - Celebrity Big Brother and Racism

The Racism Controversy involving Shilpa Shetty in the Celebrity Big Brother UK Show

Like the Gandhi pole dancing video controversy, this Shilpa Shetty racism controversy also seems to be an issue where the media created a 'baat ka bhatangar' ( mountain out of a mole hill). The media has succeeded in getting everyone's attention and creating a talking point out of nothing as usual. The term 'outrage' is always useful in selling tabloids and increasing television ratings.

shilpa shetty racism crying celebrity big brother jade goody britain india englandFar from racism this Shilpa Shetty Celebrity Big Brother case seems to be more an issue of harmless bullying. Everyone does it at sometime or the other - maybe to classmates, colleagues, siblings or people in the bus. Bullying comments can refer to anything under the sun - features, height, built, religion, race, language, region, accent, hair color, clothes or family status. Poking fun at people is common - if you are on the recieving end you just have to say something more clever or meaner back ! That's life.

In kindergarten I used to get picked on by kids you were jealous my Dad used to drop me off to class while they had to take the bus. In eight grade, it was me who made kids cry by saying real mean things about thier fatness or choice of hair style. Bullying is caused by a feeling of jealousy. Among girls, the main victims are those who are prettier, smarter and attract the attention of males. Guys are usully not aware of the mean fights for them. Infact, in most reality shows you will always see women voting off or nominating more attractive women. Girls never get together to vote off guys. Other reasons why people are bullied are because of their better job, education, popularity, luck, fancy car or whatever. Bullying continues as long as you don't say anything back. In Shilpa Shetty's case the bullying was there for everyone to see on international television.

No idea why folks are saying that Shilpa Shetty 'did'nt need to be' on the show. Why should she give up such a huge chance to gain big money and publicity. She reportedly got 350,000 pounds to be on the 'Big Brother' reality show which equals to a huge 3,04,50,000 Indian Rupees. This is more than three times what she makes per Bollywood Film. Most of Shilpa Shetty's recent films have flopped at the box office like Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar. With Big Brother, she has a chance to win more cash if she stays on till the end. With the large population of Indians in Britain rooting for her, she can easily get her 'enemies' voted off the show. The publicity may also help her get high paying assignments abroad. Why should she stick to India for pride if millions of Indians are leaving for better opportunities abroad?

shilpa shetty racism crying celebrity big brother jade goody britain india englandSo what if a few folks said some annoying stuff. Shilpa Shetty is a grown up woman and not an innocent school kid who should sob in the corner. She should give as good as she gets. After all, Big Brother is a reality show known for contestants saying odd, treacherous statements that cause 'conflict' and others trying to gain public sympathy. This is the selling point of the show and the main reason why it is popular worldwide. Shilpa Shetty surely must have seen the Indian Version of the show 'Big Boss' and learnt something, else it would'nt have been Goody but she who was voted out.

shilpa shetty racism crying celebrity big brother jade goody britain india englandMore irritating than the media reports about the so called 'racist' comments against Shilpa Shetty are the behavior of politicians and certain social groups who are trying to gain mileage from this non issue. Sponsors withdrew, MP Keith Vaz tabled a motion in British Parliament , naked PETA activists protested, Indian tourism department came up with a silly ad on Jade Goody, bottles of Goody's Shhh perfume were broken and effergies were burnt in Bihar by local political parties - Really, what a circus !

So what do you think about the Shilpa Shetty Big Brother Controversy?

Gandhi YouTube Controversy - Gautham Prasad

Gandhi You Tube Controversy - Gautham Prasad Vs Indian Media

"I believe in equality for everyone, except reporters and photographers" - Mahatma Gandhi.

Today, I thought I'd take a look at the Mahatma Gandhi pole dancing video created by New York based comedian Gautham Prasad on Youtube.com to see what the controversy was about.

mahatma gandhi pole dancing video gautham prasad nri comedian cnn ibn sahara youtube you tubeThe Gandhi YouTube video begins with this skinny Indian guy wearing a fake nose/glasses mask, dhoti and white shawl dancing around a pole to the tune of Punjabi bhangra music. The dancing was not obscene as such but quite comic. It seemed the kind of dancing a drunk computer nerd who watched reruns of the 'Dus Bahane' video would do. Infact, I found myself laughing quite a bit.

Well then, what was the Gandhi pole dancing controversy about ? Two Indian news channels hungry for ratings - CNN IBN and Sahara aired the video begging the government to take notice. The govenment obviously reciprocated with letters to Youtube and the television channels asking for an apology and ban. Being a journalist for the past few years I have many colleagues working for these channels and thought a post on this topic was in demand.

mahatma gandhi pole dancing video gautham prasad nri comedian cnn ibn sahara youtube you tubeWhen I first joined the media around five years ago I had great dreams of uncovering the truth, bringing the evils of society to light and spurring the govenment to take action . With the growth of television news channels, competition and the need to make huge profits increased. Instead of the above ideals we were forced to do stories on mundane topics that would attract the most eyeballs and boost ratings. Some of the stories that disgusted me were the Amarmani Tripathi-Madhumita Shukla diary excerpts and the fake Salman Khan-Aishwarya Rai tapes.

This Gandhi pole dancing video on Youtube controversy is a similar case. 'The media is supposed to report the news not make the news. This is a typical situation where the media created a controversy where none existed. Yes, my colleagues I am blaming you. Its pretty easy to turn to the internet for a juicy tidbit to attract the attention of viewers. The govenment is completely justified in asking you to apologise. Stop this nonsense about 'free press' and 'free speech', it is your fault and you know it.

At every morning meeting the bureau chiefs and reporters decide on the stories for the day. Why did you pick this story ? The internet is filled with controversial stuff like violence and porn. Will you always turn to it when you run out of suitable gossip and go about asking folks and ministers for their reaction ? Using words in your script like outrage, incense, fury, vulgar to create the same may ensure short term advertising revenue but is quite an unhealthy approach towards news.

mahatma gandhi pole dancing video gautham prasad nri comedian cnn ibn sahara youtube you tubeAs for Gautham Prasad, this 29 year old professional clown who acted in the Gandhi pole dancing video - he has sure got some great publicity for his shows, yoga classes and website skinnyindian.com. Wonder if he has a relative or friend working in the electronic media...wink. Plus, he has apologised on his site, so what else can be said ?? I am sure if Gandhi was alive he would have forgiven him !

    What say you ??

    Baabul - Movie Review

Movie Review Of Baabul - yesterday I watched Baabul on cable and this is what I though of the movie.

baabul movie reviewBaabul (fathers home) - 4/10 - Starring Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, John Abraham and Rani Mukherjee. Baabul is a film about widow remarriage. Mili (Rani) marries Avinash (Salman) who later dies in an accident while speaking on his mobile phone. Now the irritating second half - Avinash’s Dad (Amitabh Bachchan) sees Mili real sad and tries to get her hooked up with her long time friend Rajat (Jon Abraham). There is a bit of opposition from Amitabh’s family (maryada…parampara etc. etc.) and the film finally ends with the two of them tying the knot.

Though the director seems to have a noble intention, I found Baabul quite boring. Rani Mukherjee does not have any chemistry either with Salman Khan or John Abraham. Lots of Rona Dhona (crying scenes), Amitabh’s preachy dialogues, Rani’s ‘half smile’ lackluster acting and a script that made the characters behave and speak unnaturally were some of the glaring faults of Baabul. The music was average. If Salman Khan and John Abraham were not acting in this film, I would have skipped it !

Unanswered questions - why would someone force their widowed daughter-in-law to marry less than a year after their son’s death? Why should anyone assume a lady’s life is in darkness just cause she is without a man and the only way she can become happy again is by ‘remarrying’?

    Did you watch Baabul ?
