Before the marriage ceremony, Sashi Tharoor and Sunanda Pushkar went for darshan at Ajmer Dargah, Shirdi Sai Baba Mandir, Shani Shingnapur Mandir and other religious places for blessings.
The marriage ceremony of Shashi Tharoor was held on Sunday, August 22nd 2010 at 8.30 am according to traditional Hindu Nair customs at his ancestral home at Elavenchery, Kollengode village, 40 km from Palakkad. The wedding was held in the presence of his 94-year-old maternal grandmother.
For the marriage, Sunanda Pushkar wore a traditional Kerala ’kasavu’ sari in white with a gold border. Shashi Tharoor was wearing a white kurta and white lungi (mundu) with gold border. She was wearing some nice gold jewellery, but not enough for a South Indian marriage.
Guests at the Wedding
There were around 100 people present for the wedding, mostly women relatives. The kids of both Sashi (twin boys)and Sunanda (one son) from their previous marriages, were also present for the marriage ceremony. A ’Niraputhiri’ function was held at the house and he tied the ’thali’ (mangalsutra) around her neck. They also exchanged garlands and Sashi gave Sunanda a ’podava’ or a new set of clothes.
They will be going for their honeymoon to Dubai and Spain. They have planned a reception in Dubai for Sunanda’s friends. There will also be a reception in Delhi at the India Habitat Centre for Sashi’s friends and politicians.
Profile of the Couple
Shashi Tharoor, 54 years old, was born in London but originally hails from Palakkad in Kerala. He has been educated in Mumbai, Kolkata, Massachusetts and has done History Honours from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Thiruvananthapuram constituency in 2009. Sunanda Pushkar, 48 years of age, is a Dubai based beautician and socialite, originally from Kashmir. Both are long time friends. This is the third marriage for both of them.
I hoped you liked these photos of their wedding. We all know they are an odd couple. Sunanda looks like a dayan and Shashi Tharoor must be really rich to have married thrice. But, we all wish them a very happy married life.
