Samjhauta Express Blast - Security Issue
The 1st time - I was doing a story on the Samjhauta Express for a television channel. The train was brand new and was guarded by Railway policemen armed with rifles. Special seals were broken to enable us to enter and shoot the train. It was clean and had two types of bogies - regular cushioned three tier sleepers and unreserved compartments with wooden benches.
The 2nd Time - One of my friends was going to Pakistan for business so I went to see him off. The Samjhauta Express was leaving from the last platform of the Old Delhi Railway Station. I expected to see lots of security as it was a 'Pakistan' international train but there was not much. The platform was filthy and it smelt real bad. There was pee and puke everywhere. I have never been in a worse smelling place.
The station was crowded with loads of people who had come to see off their relatives....many were crying. The only good security measure was the police sniffer dogs who were sniffing around for RDX and other contraband. In the Samjhauta Express blasts the terrorists used kerosene which is a common household product. This must have enabled them to get past the Sniffer dogs who are not trained to sniff out kerosene.Labels: current affairs

Free Tickets To Cricket World Cup
Like all Indians who wish to watch a world cup match I too am looking for a free world cup deal. Have heard that ticket sales for the 2007 cricket world cup which start on March 5th and go on till 28 April are still quite low.
Official travel agents for the West Indies cricket world cup in India are Bharat Army Travel, SOTC Sports Abroad, Pyramid Travels in Mumbai; Air Cruise Travels and Friends Group Travels in Delhi; and Sportzvillage in Bangalore. Air Cruise has cricket world cup packages to the Caribbean ranging from 7 days to 20 days while Friends group is offering three cruise packages of 8, 15 and 20 days in April. The packages cost between 1,20,000 to 4,08,000 rupees for a single person depending on the amount of days, accomodation and matches you choose to go for. This cost includes economy air tickets, twin sharing rooms, meals, entertainment, cruise, match tickets and airport transfers in the Carribean islands. I really want to book myself on one of these cricket packages but I have no one to go with....how depressing ! Am too scared to go alone.2007 Cricket World Cup Predictions and Speculation

Premier Hockey League (PHL) India
I thought I'd write something about India's national game of hockey for a change. The Premier Hockey League was started three years ago with new rules to make hockey popular in the country. I did'nt watch many matches in the first season of 2005 when it was held at an empty stadium in Hyderabad. However, last year I watched most of the matches and all three finals. The matches were shown live and the stadium in Chandigarh from was packed with cheering spectators.
My favorite team - Chandigarh Dynamos is way back in the PHL standings and has very little chance to catch up. There is a live match on Friday, maybe they'll play Balder Bomans in his new hairstyle. Of the two teams leading the PHL standings with 14 points each, I think Sher-e-Jallandhar stand a better chance to win the PHL championship than Orissa Steelers. Maybe Chandigarh Dynamos will play better in the home matches. The team is so unlucky - players keep getting injured. Best of luck guys !Labels: Other Sports
Here is the movie reviews of two movies - Risk and Water.
Risk - 6/10 - starring Randeep Hooda (Sushmita's ex), Tanushree Datta and Seema Biswas. Risk is a movie about an honest clever cop who risks powerful folks and goes about killing gangsters. The story is loosely based on the gory life of Daya Nayak the encounter specialist cop. The actors are well cast in the film and Randeep Hooda does a very good job ! Vinod Khanna plays Khalid, a Don, whose look and getup, I thought resembled Vijay Mallya the liquor baron. A good action movie with lots of bloodshed if you are tired of the mushiness surrounding Valentines Day.
Water - 8/10 - starring John Abraham, Lisa Ray and Seema Biswas. This movie was not allowed to be shot in India by the then BJP govenment and was banned from being released. I basically wanted to see it because of John Abraham - and he was looking as sexy as usual...this time in a kurta and dhoti.Labels: Movie Reviews
Oprah Winfrey In India

I also saw the Oprah Show where Meg Ryan came to the slums in Jehangirpuri through an NGO called CARE to promote the 'girl child' issue. Meg Ryan was wearing a garland/tilak and bikharis (beggars) were running after her for 'bakshish'. Maybe, Meg Ryan is one of those good natured Americans who can't bear to see people suffering and decided to contribute to a 'cause', but the situation in India is quite different.
Those who usually run after foreigners begging and making strange faces are usually professional beggars. This means that they each own begging territory or work for a begging and robbery gang. They may also pedal drugs and engage in child prostitution. They pop their bones and roll up their eyes to look handicapped. Some may even cut off a limb to look more realistic. Some hire or kidnap children to gain sympathy that earn international currency. Ever wondered how an old skinny woman could have five kids that looked around 3 years old ?
The people who are really poor are too ashamed to beg or ask anyone for anything. They work hard as labor to earn their daily bread. Most Indians know this 'beggary trick' very well and don't give any cash though we may give food and other stuff to the children that is of no use to the begging gang.
Most NGO's are another scam. All they do is write reports, update websites, sending press releases and fundraising. The money raised is never given to those who really need it but goes in paying for foreign trips of the socialite who heads the NGO. When foreigners come visiting, the NGO's collect servants, employees and relatives to display as orphans, widows etc. for the cameras and get more cash. Foreigners can't understand the language, so they are none the wiser. Many friends who work for top NGO's tell me that this is what happens in office.
When I see innocent foreigners like Oprah Winfrey and Meg Ryan visiting India to 'help the poor', I just pray they use their charity money wisely. I'd hate for it to go to waste when there are so many people who can benefit.

Weekend Trip in Meerut
This weekend I went on a trip to the lush green fields in the Meerut area of Uttar Pradesh. I had planned this trip for weeks and dreamt of lying in the dappled shade of a mango tree doing my knitting. However, providence had something else planned. From morning to evening there were rains and icy cold winds. Determined to make the most of my short vacation, I ventured out in the fields to explore.
This scene reminded me of a book I recently read - 'A Painted House' by John Grisham. 'A Painted House' is a welcome change from the lawyer kind of books that John Grisham usually writes. It is a peaceful Tom Sawyer kind of story about farm life in the early 50's. 'A Painted House' tells about the complexities of life as seen through the eyes of Luke Chandler, seven year old boy who lives on a cotton farm in rural Arkansas, USA. The Chandlers have never had enough money to paint their house but in the end paint it even though they loose their entire cotton crop due to rains. The book is basically about the dreams of a farm kid who is tired of picking cotton and wishes to be rich and live in a painted house.
Walking through the squashy mud in Meerut district in the midst of the tall stalks of sugarcane, vegetable fields, mango and orange trees I thought of the simple joys of farming. How it must feel - to wake up every morning and head to the fields for work? Far away from the hustle and bustle of Delhi, the idea of growing and eating your own vegetables seemed real cool !Fake Profiles On Orkut
Case 1 - Delhi - An air-hostess working for Kingfisher Airlines asked a city court for help in filing a case against Orkut after a vulgar profile was posted by someone. The fake profile had a pic of her in her work uniform and her neighbors' telephone number listed for 'friendship'. Her neighbors were flooded with pesky calls leading to a lot of embarassment.
Case 2 - Delhi - The family of a school girl started recieving obscene phone calls and visits from strangers after a prankster created a lewd fake profile on Orkut and listed the girls phone number and email address.
A few months previously, Orkut was considered the safest online social networking site because it allowed members to register only through invitation. This meant that it was easy to trace created profiles to the folks who sent out the invitation. If you invited yourself to create a fake profile it could be easily found out. However, after October 2006, Orkut allowed people to sign up for a free account without an invitation. This has resulted in people making unlimited fake profiles with different email addresses and data. Maybe Orkut just wanted to increase its hits and revenue but the way I see it people have become more wary of social networking and stay away.Labels: Internet Tips
Dateless On Valentines Day
"I don't understand why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine's Day. When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon". ~Author Unknown
When I look through the shop windows at the Valentines Day cards and gifts on display, I can't help but wish someone would buy me some of the stuff on sale - even a plastic rose would do. Things look so pretty and pink, I feel like buying them for myself. However, I stop myself coz I heard somewhere that if you do, then you are jinxed to buy them for yourself all your life !
1. Sit at home watching romantic movies on StarMovies, HBO, Hallmark and the other movie channels. Usually they always play mushy flicks like You've Got Mail, When Harry Meets Sally, Serendipity, Love Actually or While You were Sleeping for lonely souls! Watching them makes me feel that there is someone perfect out there and that destiny will finally bring us together - and we'll be married for happily ever after ! Ooh what lovely dreams.
5. Valentine's Day usually ends with me chatting on the net with strangers or other dateless friends. We usually talk about the mindless advertising and marketing gimmicks of card and gift companies like Hallmark and Archies that promote Valentines Day and cause depression.
Valentines Day is tough for singles but I bet it really sucks bigtime if you have a boyfriend or husband and still don't do anything special on Valentines Day. The world and internet is full of people who hate Valentine's Day. Valentines Day haters are usually folks who are scared to ask someone out, busy with their work, refused a date, loners, computer nerds or people who think they are too ugly !Labels: Society
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows - the 7th Harry Potter Book
Recently heard in the news that the 7th installment of the Harry Potter Books - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be out on July 21st of this year. Strange name for a kid's book, but then Harry Potter and his friends live in a strange world - and so does JK Rowling.
The storylines are confusing and there is a lot of unneccessary drama - like a TV soap. Infact, I found the movies of the first four Harry Potter books more interesting. The movie script cut off the boring parts and made the pieces of the story fit in better. For example, Hermione's time travel scene in the Prisoner of Azkaban.
So, what's my prediction for the 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' book ?Labels: Books, current affairs
Review of the movie Bhagam Bhag - this weekend I saw just one movie and this is what I thought of it.
Bhagam Bhag - 3/10 - (meaning - running around) This is a brainless film - no idea what the director was thinking, most probably he was not ! Bhagam Bhag was supposed to be a comedy but it sure wasn't funny. At best, I managed a wry smile.Labels: Movie Reviews
